One of my all time favourite vehicles, the Volkswagon Westfalia microbus!

I’m getting really excited about this series and my long term plan is to sell them at Folk Festivals from a Teardrop Trailer! I can just sit there and paint little campers while selling them. Each one is a one of a kind watercolour and the pen and ink prints are reproduced via a high quality image printer on Watercolour paper. I love the fact that I can do up a custom colour version while you wait!

This is the first little Happy Camper I did. My plan is to sell enough of them to build an actual teardrop trailer. They are available in a Mat the will fit a 5×7 frame. Each one will have a Watercolour wash and the Pen and Ink part will be reproduced on a high quality printer. That way each one will be slightly different and one of a kind.

Tonight I went on the Art Bus from the Pearl Company. It was a lot of fun and the evening was very inspiring.

Here are some observations I made

Repetition, a lot of the finished pieces had the same theme and it’s ok to use variations of the same style

Gallery Working Space, our final visit was to the Tiger Group and it was nice to see the workspaces of the resident artists. The close quarters of artists working together could be encouraging and inspiring but also distracting.

I need to make a more dedicated workspace for my Watercolours in my apartment. I loved seeing the work areas and the paint splotched all over the tables and work areas. Watercolours are too clean and neat to work with it seems. This may be a crazy reason to for me to get back in to Oils or Acrylics.

Bring business cards. This is a lesson I should have learned by now. To leave the house prepared to network rather than leaving the house in Photojournalist mode when going to Art related events. I must attend these events as an artist. Not a neutral observer.

Have my work out there. I get so many offers and yet I am afraid to put my work out there. This relates to item 6.

Some art sucks! There, I said it. This greatly inspires me to put my work out there yet, when I look at the art I consider “not so great” I think to myself that the difference is between me and them is the fact that they had the confidence to put their work out there and I don’t. Making them better artists. Now don’t get me wrong there is a lot of amazing stuff out there and this is only my personal taste and it may come across harsh but I did notice some work with HUGE price tags that looked ugly and then some work marked with extremely low price tags that I considered more skillful. I have observed the at Museums and Art Galleries as well.

All in all it has been a fantastic experience and I only had time to cover the one side of the street.

I went on a trip this spring with My Sister and Brother in Law to the National Art Gallery in Ottawa to see the Rembrandt display. Of course there was other ort too so I’m not quite sure who influenced me the most but I started doing some fun Watercolours from my imagination. There is a certain freedom that comes from drawing what’s in your head compared to brick by brick detail. It’s fun and refreshing. I might try and sell a few pieces during Art Crawl.
